The City of San Benito received top honors from the Government Finance Officers’ Association this week with an award for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2012.
The City of San Benito Finance Department was recognized by the City Commission on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at a meeting held at the San Benito Municipal Building.
The recognition came after the Finance Department was awarded a national honor from the Government Finance Officers’ Association for Excellence in Financial Reporting.
“I think that it’s something that the community should be very proud of these employees of the city and, of course, your elected officials that have actually worked very hard,” said San Benito Mayor Joe H. Hernandez.

Sad,real sad.
As usual, Mayor Joe Hernandez jumps at any good opportunity to pat himself in the back just like he did after the China vacation, sorry, business trip. The citizens are still awaiting all the jobs promised by the Mayor and City Manager Mr. Lara.
“We have a Finance Department which is, by far, one of the best. You don’t get this type of recognition just like that. According to the letter that was sent, it is very rare.”
The award is “so rare”………
• That in 2012 there were 387 awards awarded 2012 Program Results | For Fiscal Years Ended in 2011
•
• That in 2011 there were 370 awards awarded 2011 Program Results | For Fiscal Years Ended in 2010
•
• That in 2010 there were 355 awards awarded 2010 Program Results | For Fiscal Years Ended in 2009
•
The cities of McAllen, Brownsville, and Harlingen have also earned the same award each of these years.
And each year the awards are handed out to those that have applied. Rare??
Thanks for the observations,”We The People”,good to know some of us are watching.
Thanks, Juan. Here’s one for you … I wonder how many employees/ elected officials attended the GFOA’s national convention, and how much was spent on travel??
To put this in perspective…the Government Finance Officers Association is a membership organization designed to further their own objectives. According to their website ‘code of ethics’ , the GFOA, “is a professional organization of public officials united to enhance and promote the professional management of governmental financial resources by identifying, developing and advancing fiscal strategies, policies, and practices for the public benefit.”
Of course they have an annual conference where members get together to pat each other on the back and hand out their awards. They also do consulting work.
One last note: The award was one where the City had to apply to receive, not one that was bestowed upon them.
But don’t take my word for it: http://www.gfoa.org
