Two granddaughters in the field of education have found the perfect way to honor their late grandmother…By creating a scholarship in her name.

Sandra Ruiz, a Higher Education Coordinator at San Benito High School, and her sister Jacklyn Chirinos, who teaches Business courses with the Career and Technology Department, founded the Sandy Romeros Perseverance Scholarship last year as a way to give back to the community and memorialize their late grandmother.

“It’s private donations through family members,” Ruiz said describing how the funds are obtained for the scholarship. “Sandy Romeros is my grandmother, so its private donations from her children and grandchildren. It’s just basically whatever the family is able to give. We started off small last year with just my sister and myself. We just gave one scholarship out. Then when the other family members got wind of that, they all wanted to continue to add funds to that to open it up to more students. This year we were able to get four scholarships with those donations.”
