emergency-lightsA babysitter spent the night in jail on Friday after the toddler she was paid to care for was found wandering the Heavin Resaca Trail alone, San Benito police said.

Alma Hernandez, 28, of San Benito was arrested Friday for endangering a child, a state jail felony which stems from an incident involving a 2-year-old boy who walked three city blocks from Hernandez’ home on the 800 block of Combes, where he was staying for the night.

Michael Galvan, Assistant Chief of Operations for the San Benito Police Department, said Hernandez was paid $15 by the child’s mother to babysit; however, officers were notified at 5:54 a.m. on May 10 that the boy had gone missing from her residence. The person who made the report was Hernandez, Galvan said.

According to a statement Hernandez provided to police, it’s believed that the 2 year old may have stood on a chair to unlock her kitchen door.
