San Benito police officers believe the man wanted for the aggravated sexual assault of two underage girls may have fled the country.

Detective Rogelio Banda Jr. of the San Benito Police Department said that the suspect, Edwin Talavera, the 37-year-old former Stonewall Jackson apartment manager and minister of a nearby church on East Stenger Street in San Benito, could have fled to Mexico or even upstate.

Still, although Banda said police are following all leads in the case it is more than likely that Talavera has already crossed the border into Mexico.

When asked if the chances of locating the suspect decreases the longer he stays on the run, Banda said, “There is some truth to that, but eventually we notice that some of them do try to come back. Like in this guy’s (Talavera’s) case, information that we’re receiving is that he does not want to go back to his home country, which is Honduras, so at some point he may want to come back to the United States.”
