At least 50 runners suited up in athletic gear around the Heavin Resaca Trail for the San Benito CISD First Annual Child Abuse Prevention 5K Walk/Run this past Saturday.
The pleasant weather welcomed runners and the community for this awareness raising event. T. Jay Wallace, Chief of Police for Valley Coastal Bend Department of Veterans Affairs emceed the event and introduced speaker Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos. Judge Cascos kicked off festivities at 9 a.m. by urging participants not to turn a blind eye to child abuse and neglect.
Although the Valley Coastal Bend Department of Veterans Affairs focuses on elder abuse, the abuse of the community’s most vulnerable is unconscionable. Chief Wallace felt it was important for local organizations to band together in solidarity.
“People are reluctant to get involved for fear of either retaliation from whomever they are reporting or testifying in a court setting, but as I mentioned we all have a responsibility to report child abuse, domestic violence or elder abuse”, Cascos said.
