RIO HONDO – The Rio Hondo Youth Sports League is set to begin its registration for the upcoming football season.
According to Gustavo “Gus” Olivares, the league will be holding registration every Saturday of May for football and cheerleading.
“We’re asking anyone interested to come and register,” said Olivares. “Registration is going to be at the Rio Hondo Park between the hours of 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.”
Registration will be for both flag football and tackle football, depending on the child’s age. Children ages three through 15 will be allowed to register.
“We’ve been having an increase in interest in football and cheer, that’s the reason we decided to make a league,” said Olivares. “A lot of our kids and parents were going to register in Harlingen. Our league decided to start football and cheer to try to keep some of our kids here locally from traveling for practices and representing our town.”
According to Olivares, this will be the third year that the sport of football has been a part of the league. The league is a part of TYFA (Texas Youth Football Association), which doesn’t allow full-contact practices until July 29. The first day of practice is June 15.
