The Housing Authority of the City of San Benito may soon decide whether it’ll purchase the now defunct Stonewall Jackson.

“We are still doing some final reviews,” said Arnold Padilla, Housing Authority executive director. “We’re waiting on some test results, but everything seems to be coming back fairly good. We are still in a position of consideration. In the next week or two we may make our final decision. We’re moving forward, waiting for the final results.”

As previously reported by the San Benito News, the Housing Authority has shown interest in the purchase of the historic hotel, an 86-year-old edifice located at 220 E. Stenger St. that was once hailed as the toast of the town, with the possibility of utilizing the building for something other than housing.

They don’t fool anybody; based on the current activity at the Stonewall, the decision has already been made!

My understanding is the Housing Authority Board Executive Director and board members are political appointees by Mayor Joe Hernandez. They are approved by the commission but it is the Mayor who selects the appointees.

Hopefully the voters remember that at the next election if this purchase is made!
