Traffic on the northbound lanes of Expressway 83 and FM 509 in San Benito had to be diverted Friday evening following an accident involving an 18-wheeler.

According to San Benito Police Department Detective Rogelio Banda Jr., a call came in to the department at approximately 6:50 p.m. Friday, March 22, regarding a major traffic accident.

“The officers observed a white Chevrolet Malibu with four females inside the vehicle, all in their 40s and 50s from San Benito,” said Banda. “They were apparently traveling north when the collision occurred with a blue Kenworth tractor trailer, contracted by the US Postal Service.”

As of 9:30 p.m. Friday, police did not know exactly what caused the collision.

“The Malibu sustained considerable damage to the driver’s side,” said Banda. “The driver of the 18-wheeler cooperated with officers. All of the females were transported to different hospitals in Harlingen.”

Banda said that the two females riding in the front of the vehicle sustained more injuries than those in the back.

“Firefighters had to use the jaws of life to remove the females from the vehicle,” Banda said. “I don’t know their conditions at this time. Paramedics at the scene advised us that they sustained serious injuries, but they were non-life threatening.”

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the collision, Banda added.

Authorities said traffic had to be diverted from the expressway to the frontage, prompting numerous calls to the police department from angry motorists.

“Traffic had to be rerouted from the expressway to the frontage so first responders could work,” said Banda. “Please understand that in these times of emergencies, we have to look out for the safety of everyone involved; ours too.”
