“Tomorrow, at four o clock, HEB will be presenting a check to help the Boys and Girls Club stay open,” Tommy Ramirez Jr., President of the Board of Directors for the club, said on Tuesday. “There will also be a presentation to create a children’s technology library using Kindles and iPads.”
The HEB check presentation, scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, is just one of the many efforts to keep the club’s doors open, including a recent donation of approximately $2,733 from Fun N Sun during their Western Day Festival.
“Right now we are waiting to hear back from the City of Harlingen for discounts to use a golf course for a Save The Club Golf Tournament in April,” said Ramirez. “There is also an organization out of Harlingen that coordinates running events, which is putting together a 5k run to benefit the club on April 6.”
The San Benito City Commission met Tuesday evening to decide whether the city would provide monetary relief to the club, which according to Ramirez is in danger of closing after approximately three months worth of emergency funds are exhausted, lest $75,000 is raised to continue operations.
“We’re just going to stay optimistic and keep moving forward,” Ramirez said. “The City is supposed to make an announcement at a meeting about whether they will help the club. Regardless, we are still moving forward. I’m really pleased with how the San Benito and Harlingen communities have come forward to help out with numerous fundraising events to keep the club open.”
