A young man from San Benito will be showcasing his football skills when he attends a camp in March.

Twelve-year-old Tommy Castro is one of 100 kids selected to participate in Football University (FBU), an invitation-only training camp which features NFL (National Football League) coaches and instructors.

Castro, a sixth grade student at Miller Jordan Middle School, will be attending the camp on March 15 to the 17 in San Antonio.

When asked about his FBU selection, the soft-spoken young man responded said, “It felt good.”

“We actually work during the off-season,” said his father, Eddie Castro. “I work him out off the field. We run bleachers, working the ladder and just work on his speed.”

“He was the only running back in the league who rushed for over 1000 yards,” Eddie further remarked about his son’s recent football season, a feat that most likely contributed to his selection to the TYFA (Texas Youth Football and Cheer Association) All Star Game at the Alamodome on January 2.

When asked who he admires most on the football field, the future San Benito Greyhound responded, “Barry Sanders.”

  1. So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly? Harlingen that is! He better hope there’s not another player his age out there who admires Dick Butkus.

  2. Good for him and his parents that keep him busy in these extracurricular activities.
I’m glad he is also setting a good example to his peers.
