HoundsDressed out to support her team, Rosa Gomez, top scorer of last Friday’s game, sported a purple cast on her left arm as she cheered on her fellow varsity Lady Hounds from the sidelines of this Friday’s game.

The Lady Hounds basketball team took the court by storm as Jav’ana Gonzales scored the first two points of the game against the Hidalgo Lady Pirates. Hidalgo caught up, even tying with the Lady Hounds at one point.

In the first quarter, San Benito was ahead with a score of 6-2. With 1:42 left on the clock, San Benito extended the lead with a left-handed layup followed by a free throw, bringing the score to 9-7 as the buzzer sounded, signaling the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Hounds kept the lead throughout the second quarter as Kailha Reyes extended it with a jumper from the baseline, bringing the lead to double digits with a score of 17-7. San Benito’s Stephanie Castro quickly followed her by drilling a three-point shot from behind the arch, and after a series of loose ball scrambles, the Lady Hounds took a commanding 11-point lead. The team finished the quarter strong, with Reyes earning two out of three points from the free-throw line on a three-shot foul, bringing the score to 23-15 at the half.

Elbows were flying and tempers were flaring as the Lady Hounds once again brought an intense style of defense to the court, earning four more points and blocking most Lady Pirate attempts to score, thus keeping the lead as the third quarter ended with a score of 27-24.

San Benito’s Giselle Shoenmaker started the quarter off on the right foot, leading the way with a soft bank and scoring San Benito’s first two points of the fourth quarter, but a three-pointer put Hidalgo in the lead with 5:12 left in the final quarter. Down 32-24, San Benito called a timeout as Lady Hounds Head Coach Clarisse Arredondo rallied her team.

The Lady Hounds showed what they were made of as they returned to the court, stiffening up on D and playing the Lady Pirates much more aggressively.

The Lady Hounds fought hard and valiantly, but in the end, the Lady Pirates emerged victorious, with a final score of 39-33.

Coach Arredondo did not comment on the game.

Lady Pirates Head Coach Monica Rodriguez said, “It was tough. We played with our hearts, but the Lady Hounds sure were a tough team to beat.”
