WESLACO – As the San Benito Greyhounds gear up for the last half of district play, starting this Friday when they travel to Weslaco for a date with the Weslaco East Wildcats, their only shot at a district crown will be to win out the rest of their schedule.

The ’Hounds sit at 2-2 in district play and are only one game back of district-leading Weslaco for the top spot in 31-5A.

If nothing else, the Greyhounds will certainly be tested in the coming weeks facing three of the top teams in 31-5A through their next four games. “We definitely have some good teams in front of us, but we’ve faced good teams all year,” said senior defensive lineman Adrian Zuniga. “It’s something that we’re ready for so expect our best.”

Zuniga has been a monster for the San Benito defense, which has allowed a league low 12.6 points per game this year. Weslaco East isn’t far behind, only yielding 13.8 points per contest. With both teams boasting a bevy of talent on defense, this one will likely be up to the offense to decide.

Quarterback Jesse Jimenez and running back Arturo Coronado are the duo that makes up the starting backfield for the Greyhounds, and while Coronado has proven he is as dynamic as he is fast, scoring two touchdowns on kickoffs in addition to his running production, Jimenez seems to be peaking at the right time, having arguably his best game of the season last week.

With the San Benito defense playing as lights out as they have and Coronado running up and down the field at ease, Jimenez will need to have an equally impressive showing for the ’Hounds to improve on their 1-2 road record this year.

The luxury for San Benito is that even if its offense slips a little, the team has a defense strong enough to hold up. “We’re a complete team,” said Zuniga. “We don’t rely on just the offense or just the defense, we play together and in the end we win or lose together.”

Kick-off in Friday’s Greyhounds vs. Wildcats contest is set for 7:30 p.m. in Weslaco.
