San Benito High School cross country athlete, Brenda Lopez outran nearly 200 others in her division last weekend at the Islander Splash meet, which was held at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi.
The 18-year-old Lopez finished strong with a time of 19:35. “It was a pretty hilly course,” said Danny De La Rosa, SBHS head coach for girls’ cross country. De La Rosa expanded by saying, “The course was under water with a lot of rain, and it was wet and muddy. Her time wasn’t bad for the conditions.”
It is reported that on Wednesday of last week, Texas Tech running coach John Murray came down to watch Lopez practice. “He watched Brenda do a workout and run,” said De La Rosa. “And he talked with her about what opportunities Tech could offer her.” Additionally, after the Islanders meet, Lopez remained in Corpus Christi to meet with other recruiters.
