fire hydrant“Some areas do not have fire protection at this time,” said City Manager Manuel Lara of a city-wide effort to identify such locations in the City of San Benito. He added, “Wherever needed, we’re installing as well as repairing fire hydrants.”

City officials note that at least some San Benito fire hydrants can be dated back to the 1930s. Additionally, when antiquated fire hydrants malfunction, it is not always convenient or even possible to locate replacement parts. The city has reportedly begun taking action to identify areas in which fire hydrants are improperly working or nonexistent.

Asst. City Manager of Emergency Services Arturo Rodriguez mentioned, “I will get with the water district supervisor, and he will provide me a list of all fire hydrants which have and have not been replaced.” From there, Rodriguez feels that the city should be able to progress with the refurbishment or replacement of hydrants, a measure approved since July.
