SBCISDArchitects, construction workers and electricians aren’t necessarily professions associated with high school students. Nonetheless, students at San Benito High School not only have the ability to study these trades, after October 1 and under the supervision of their respective instructors, they will be building homes for the San Benito Public Housing Authority (PHA).

Director of Career and Technical Educational Programs, Hector Rendon teaches construction technology at SBHS. He said, “The [trade] program emphasizes trade classes for either internships – paid or unpaid – or job shadowing activities, to provide authentic projects for our students. What better way to do that than actually building a home?”

The San Benito PHA is partnering with San Benito Consolidated Independent School District (SBCISD), specifically the school’s trade department. An agreement was signed for the school trade department to oversee an educational project for high school students to begin building 1200 sq. foot, three bedroom homes for the housing authority.
