McALLEN – The San Benito Greyhounds dropped their first game of the season in their district opener on Thursday, a 13-12 loss to the McAllen Memorial Mustangs.

San Benito no doubt missed the presence of running back Arturo Coronado, who sat out his second game of the season with an undisclosed ailment.

McAllen Memorial was able to control the ball on offense for most of the first half, rejecting the Greyhound offense from getting much of a rhythm going. Despite the Greyhound offense being kept in check, it was the ’Hounds who scored first when the Mustangs muffed a first quarter punt, resulting in a safety for San Benito.

The 2-0 lead would stay in place through the first quarter and with a missed field goal for the Mustangs to start the second quarter, San Benito looked to be up for the challenge of a defensive bout. With both teams looking a little stagnant offensively, Jacob Flores came up with a big interception for the ’Hounds to prevent the Mustangs from putting up their first points.
