RIO HONDO – The Rio Hondo Bobcats faced the Sinton Pirates in a grueling battle on home turf. But in the end, it was the Pirates who came out victorious, 48-27.
To start the game, the Pirates scored a couple touchdowns early in the first quarter bringing them up 14-0.
Bobcat quarterback Juan Puga sailed a pass to wide receiver Sergio Perez, who danced around the endzone to stay in bounds, getting the ’Cats behind by a touchdown with the score being 14-6. The Pirates followed up quick with a touchdown that gave them a 21-6 lead.
A Puga hand-off to Perez then made it a one-possession game for the second time. And that would be the theme of the entire contest. Followed by a successful two-point conversion completed by wide receiver, Isaiah Valledarez, the score was now 21-14 in favor of the Pirates.
But with seven seconds left on the clock in the first half, Sinton scored once again to make the tally 28-14 going into halftime.
Still, the ’Cats had a lot of fight left in them as running back Hernan Guerrero scored on a three-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. After a couple of miscues the Pirates took advantage of, Sinton again led by a two touchdown margin, 34-21.
Nearing the fourth quarter, running back Rolando Vega was able to score on a touchdown scamper to get the Bobcats within eight points at 35-27.
The Pirates then capitalized on a turnover late in the fourth quarter and followed that up with another score to close the game out at 48-27.
This coming week will be homecoming for the Bobcats. There will be a parade held at Bobcats Stadium on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. followed by Friday night’s football game against the La Grulla Gators. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. on September 21.
