Proposal to remove stop loss agent heats up

SBCISDMonday, the San Benito CISD Board Trustees voted to approve a proposal on the district’s stop loss insurance with an added provision to speak to ING Employee Benefits and to discuss removing Bob Treviño Insurance as the stop loss agent.

The original proposal was to move the insurance filing from the agent to the school itself, thus saving the district, according to Board Secretary June Aguilera, a total of $104,000 a year.

“I do not understand why we have an agent with a 10 percent commission when we can do it ourselves,” Aguilera said during the meeting. “It makes no sense.”

The decision came after heated debate from Board Member Oscar Medrano, who asked about the liabilities caused by the proposed removal of the agents.

I wonder if the same questions would be asked if the SIG group was the agent for the insurance. A few years ago the district that is self insured lost over 3 million, it would have been more if it hadn’t been for stop loss insurance. On snother note, The other bid besides ING was 800,000 higher.

Very well stated on this issue. These new Board Members were elected by the citizens to implement CHANGE in the District, The voters elected them over years and years of Experienced Incumbents, because they wanted CHANGE.
The previous Board had their time and now give the new Board their chance

Now, here is the million dollar tough question, to the only Board Member that opposed the motion to remove the agent-
ALL claims are legally documented and each claim will provide in
“BLACK AND WHITE” the name of the individual that initiated and completed these forms and should it be proven beyond reasonable doubt that AGENT never completed any of these forms in any way, shape or form, than –
EXACTLY HOW MANY YEARS HAS THIS AGENT BEEN RECEIVING A COMMISSION JUST FOR USING HIS NAME ON THE DOTTED LINE AND WHO (BESIDES-MR. LIMON, SUPERINTENDENT) WERE THE PREVIOUS BOARD MEMBERS THAT APPROVED THIS AGENT???

The Taxpayers are entitle to the TRUTH.

LOL it is so funny that these people still back up Limon and Medrano. Do you all not see the mess that the “old” school board and superintendent have done to the school district, lead it straight into unacceptable ratings. You all don’t like the new school board because its stirring up what you all do not want to be uncovered. And please, Medrano is the worst one on the board.

    Chonito,
Where do you get your facts? Unless you are talking about the stop-loss insurance company reducing their premium by $800,000, you are way off here. The RFP for stop-loss clearly stated that the Estimated Annual Premium for the Policy Year beginning October 1, 2011, was to be $1,010,061. That is premium paid never to be seen again. At 10% (the RFP says 12%) total commissions are $101,000. At 12%, commissions total $121,207. The RFP also shows that there were six claims filed between October 1, 2010 and August 2012. If your “certified insurance agent” worked the claims, that equates to about $16,800 per claim for the service. And by the way, your CIA does not work the claims. There also may be commissions/fees included in the BCBS portion of the SCISD insurance. Find out if that is the case, add those two numbers together and then criticize Ms. Aguilera for asking the question, “What is our return on $100K+ per year?”

The issue at hand can truly be argued both ways. Medrano has a point – as does Aguilera. As far as voting goes, I do hope more citizens come out to vote. The city should be represented truly and as best as possible. Power and opinions will always lead to some sort of corruption when it comes to the SB school board. I wouldn’t call it corruption so much; favoritism probably fits better. One last note: in reference to insurance, why can’t/won’t the school board and SBCISD clarify the school board president’s role in the whole insurance hoopla. It clearly seems she did overstep her boundaries yet her actions have yet to be addressed. Accountability is what the SBCISD stresses everyday – in its teachers, students, and administration. It is very disappointing to see that the ball has been dropped in regards to this matter.

  1. Come on san benito lets not forget what we need to do, get rid of a corrupt board president. Please dont lose sight of this. we need to stick together and get rid of Yliana. We need to be more selective when choosing leaders for our children. Is this who we want as president? someone with no self respect, morals, or values? Speak up greyhounds!

Lets hope the district didn’t have to rebid. June could cost the district lots of money. Now that the insurance companies know that 800,000 was left on table they could come back legally with a higher bid and the district would be stuck with higher bid. She better hope that doesn’t happen!

I cannot believe that after everything that has gone on with this insurance scandal, this board still allows this Hyliar Insurance Consultant to speak or even give his opinion at a public meeting. This man should have been let go a long time ago just like Janie Gonzalez! As for letting go of the Stop Loss Insurance Agent, shame on June Aguilera for putting this responsibility on our district staff. Last time I checked our staff are not certified Insurance Agents! This is a liability on our school district that could come back to haunt whoever is working the claims. What June Aguilera forgot to mention was that this company was already saving the district over $800,000 dollars!! It is obvious that this Aguilera girls is clueless and did not read the bid! On the meeting on tv, she even admitted not going to the finance committee. Common sense tells you that insurance agent are paid for their service. I wonder what June Aguilera’s real motives were? I think we all know the answer! NO TIENEN VERGUENZA!!!

      chonito,

You must be related to the last rodeo. You cannot beleive that the Superintendent and Liitle Felix (Oscar) are not on the BoB Trevino gravy train. What superintendent wouldn’t want to save 100,000 k in todays budget crisis. Mr. Limon is the only one thats who, and his partner Oscar M. Then they try to couch it as a liability issue………..even you cannot be that ignorant. CUDOS to June and Mr. Juerta for stepping up and supporting the taxpayers.
