Nate Mireles1“It still hasn’t hit me,” said 16-year-old Nathan (Nate) Mireles about his role in securing a victory for the San Benito Greyhounds over the Harlingen Cardinals in Friday’s 83rd Annual Battle of the Arroyo.

Humble, maybe, but Mireles, who started playing football at age five is proving to be a force on the gridiron. Mireles, a junior at San Benito High School, made the varsity team as a sophomore, so this is his second season as a starting defensive back.

After recording two interceptions, at pivotal points in Friday’s ‘Battle,’ there’s a buzz going around the Valley about Mireles. After all, his two picks helped seal the win for the ’Hounds since one lead to the winning touchdown and the other ended the Cards’ last opportunity to score.

People are taking notice. Local voices have already begun to consider Mireles one of the all-time legends in the history of Greyhound football.
