A battle is waged, and more than victory is at stake. This is personal.
Tuesday marked the first day of ticket sales for the 83rd Annual Battle of the Arroyo, the grudge match between the long-time rivals San Benito Greyhounds and Harlingen Cardinals, which will be played at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Bobby Morrow Stadium.
“What it represents is bragging rights,” San Benito’s Head Coach Spencer Gantt said in an award-winning video documentary produced last year by the school district’s KSBG TV station. Gantt elaborated that the victorious school gets to say, “[My town beat] your town; we get the trophy this year…and we get to brag about it for the next 365 days.”
‘Battle’ festivities started Sunday, September 2, when the Greyhound Quarterback Club and volunteers decorated the stadium in purples and golds. “We met at 3 p.m.,” said Quarterback Club President Rosie Leal. “The school is decorated from the frontage road to the entrance of Bobby Morrow Stadium.”
