Early voting begins Monday

ElectionsEarly voting in the 2012 primary runoff elections begins Monday and will last through Friday.

Several races were left unsettled after the May election, including the race for the newly formed District 34 Congressional seat. Other high-profile races include candidates for the District 2 State Board of Education and Cameron County District Attorney.

Republicans must also choose their candidates for railroad commissioners and two Supreme Court justices, both of which were settled on the Democratic side of the ticket.

In the Democratic run-off for the District 34 Congressional race, Denise Saenz Blanchard will square off against Filemon Vela. In the Republic runoff for the same seat, Adela Garza faces Jessica Puente Bradshaw.

Democrats Carlos Masso and Luis Saenz will also face each other in the Democratic runoff for Cameron County District Attorney.

Candidates vying for a seat on the District 2 State Board of Education are Democrats Celeste Z. Sanchez and Ruben Cortez, Jr.

Election Day is Tuesday, July 31. Winners of the Republican and Democratic primaries will square-off in the general election on Nov. 6.

Officials in the Cameron County elections office said early voters should bring either a valid ID or voter registration card.

Voters can early vote at any of the nine county voting stations. There are two stations in the area, one in San Benito and one in Los Fresnos.

The early voting station in San Benito is in the San Benito Community Building, located at 210 E. Heywood St.

In Los Fresnos, the early voting station is at the Los Fresnos Community Building, located at 204 N. Brazil.

Polls open at 10 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. each day at both locations. Other county locations’ polling times may be different.
