San Benito CISD officials said Tuesday that staff-wide furloughs are a “worst-case scenario” in efforts to offset a $3 million budget shortfall.
Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón said that the furloughs, an unpaid temporary lay-off, would only be necessary should the state legislature not “improve funding” at its bi-annual meeting. “The state sends us less (funding),” Limón said before stressing that the shortfall was as a result of statewide cuts to education. “It’s not anything we’ve done wrong. It’s the budget from the legislature.”
If utilized, however, four to five day furloughs would be set for all district employees in school year 2013-2014, saving the district $1.5 million. “But it’s a worst-case scenario,” Limón noted.
