San Benito police officers recently arrested one of their own for allegedly pointing a gun at a Sheriff’s deputy.

As first reported by the San Benito News Monday morning via sbnewspaper.com, San Benito police officer Candido Ortiz, 51, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer following an incident in which deputies with the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department responded to a domestic disturbance at his home, located on the 20000 block of FM 800.

There, Sheriff Omar Lucio said that Ortiz, a member of the Texas Army National Guard and decorated 16-year veteran of the SBPD, was involved in a physical altercation with his son while under the influence of alcohol. The sheriff said that deputies were also informed that Ortiz was a San Benito police officer and member of the department’s SWAT team.

We don’t know all the specifics, so let’s not rush to judgment.

Remember, he is considered “Innocent if and until proven guilty”
