Voters all across the county and state are preparing to cast their ballots in hotly-contested races on Tuesday, May 29.
Early voting tallies as of Thursday, May 24, have indicated that 14,403 ballots have been cast thus far, 12,013 of which were for the Democratic Primary and 2,390 for the Republican Primary. In San Benito, 1,203 were counted from San Benito for the Democratic Primary and 177 in the Republican; 1,112 and 193 were cast from Los Fresnos and 111 and 26 from Rio Hondo, respectively.
One position up for election in the Democratic Party is the United States Representative District 34 spot, which Ramiro Garza Jr., Denise Saenz Blanchard, Salomon Torres, Filemon Vela, Elmo M. Aycock, Anthony P. Troiani, Juan Angel Guerra and Armando Villalobos are all vying for a shot at the new seat.
Other positions up for election include District Judge 138, in which Arturo Cisneros Nelson will face Veronica Farias; District Judge 404, where Rebecca E. RuBane and Elia Cornejo Lopez are hopefuls, Cameron County District Attorney with Carlos R. Masso facing Luis V. Saenz and Maria Urbina de Ford, Omar Lucio has challengers in Joe Cisneros and Terry Vinson, Cameron County Commissioner Precinct 3 shows incumbent David A. Garza versus Joe Salazar, County Chairman has Jared Hockema, John “Roca” Shergold, and Sylvia Garza-Perez all facing off,
State Board of Education District 2 includes Celeste Zepeda Sanchez, Larry E. Garza, and Ruben Cortez, Jr., and for Precinct 3 Constable incumbent Joe Cavazos is being challenged by Frank Robles, Jr.
Democratic poling locations for San Benito, Rio Hondo, and Los Fresnos are as follows:

• Precinct 18, Fire Station, 1205 S. Sam Houston, San Benito
• Precinct 19, San Benito Community Building, 210 E. Heywood St., San Benito
• Precinct 21, Frank Roberts Elementary School, 650 N. Biddle St., San Benito
• Precinct 22, Sullivan Elementary School, 900 Elizabeth St., San Benito
• Precinct 40, Fred Booth School, 705 Zaragoza St., San Benito
• Precinct 50, Ed Downs Elementary School, 1302 N. Dick Dowling, San Benito
• Precinct 51, La Paloma Elementary School, 35076 Main St., San Benito
• Precinct 25, Los Indios Family Learning Center, 318 Heywood St., Los Indios
• Precinct 3, 66, Los Fresnos Community Center, 204 Brazil St., Los Fresnos
• Precinct 65, Las Palmas Housing Project Community Room, Highway 100 and Orive Blvd., Los Fresnos
• Precinct 20, 81, Rio Hondo Civic Center, 121 N. Arroyo St., Rio Hondo
In the Republican Primary, running for the District Attorney position is Chuck Mattingly and Gus Garza. For U.S. Representatives District 34, there is Paul B Haring, Adela Garza, and Jessica Puente Bradshaw facing off while Veronica Anzaldua will go against Laurie J. Turner for the State Board of Education District 2.
