Board president’s letter spawns insurance confusion, trustees object

San Benito CISD School Board President Yliana G. Rodriguez has announced changes regarding the district’s insurance agents to the protest of two fellow trustees.

In a letter dated May 16 and signed by Rodriguez, the board president informed the district’s insurance agent, identified by administrators as Bob Treviño Insurance Group, that the Robert Champion, Jr. and Salazar Insurance Group would be the “sole agents handling all medical, dental and stoploss contracts for the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District.”

Bob Treviño Insurance Group has served the district since 2002; administrators confirmed Friday that the district pays $300 per employee every month, a cost that varies depending on the plan.

This woman wants to reprimand the superindent for anything she can, like when she falsly accused, intentionally attempting to discredit him for calling a meeting he advised her about for which she had no objection at first, then the attorney saying he was in the right all along. Can she now reprimand herself? She is in the wrong. Why SB after years of staying out of the news do yall elect someone like this who brings about the wrong type of publicity. This will hurt SB.

Do School Board Presidents make decisions on their own? I think not. Regardless, I believe there is a chain of command, and a protocol on how to award contracts, and this certainly not the way. And this is just the beginning… Sadly, the taxpayers will be paying for the mistakes of these people for years.
Are there any adults in charge here??

The article notes school board policy BDAA Legal and BDAA Local. I commend the reporters for researching theses policies. Where in the policies does it state that the board president had the authority to do what she did? She declined to discuss the matter when contacted by a reporter. Really? She signed the letter so why decline to comment? All SBCISD employees should be asking that question.

The article listed SBCISD Board Policies BDAA-Legal/Local. I commend the reporters for researching these policies. From what was written, no where does it state that the board president had the authority to do what she did. She announced changes? How is that possible? The action she took was never discussed with the school board members (as stated in the article). She declined to discuss the matter when contacted by a reporter. Really ?? She signed the letter so why decline to comment? I hope someone is asking that question.

This lady has no business being president or serving on the board, but I bet you a bucket of beer that the new board members (her buddies) will put her back as president. She is embarrassing herself and our school district. I wonder what connections she has with these vendors Robert Champion Jr and Salazar Insurance??? I wonder if these people contributed to her campaign in exchange for their business?? Why is she so desperate in giving these guys the business?? I hope that the school district employees who voted for this nut are happy to know that they might lose their insurance thanks to her. Keep digging San Benito News!! LET THE CIRCUS BEGIN!!!!

The power has gone to her head! Throw her off the board and have Dr. Smetter take her place!

So no board approval & no supt. approval. Does the term, “breach of contract” mean anything to the president? All these companies had contracts, or didn’t she know that? Wow, starting the new board off with litigation– not very smart, but that is what the people of San Benito wanted. So, do the employees have insurance or not?

    1. Sir …..You don’t even know what you are saying . The problem here is that she is looking at the Mess that all other Board Members left behind.I hope they caught all the corruption that is here in our district. And all who are liable to get what they deserve Have each and everyone Arrested…..And on Smetter having her sit please she is one of them… you do for me and I do for you ….then we would be in the same boat or even worse

Why? Maybe there is a good reason but taxpayers need to know that it will not cost us more, will not create litigation, will improve services, will save taxpayers and employees money and this is not a politcal favor. When there is no reason given it does sound alarms.

A school district is a business. You cannot empower educators to manage the money end of a business. While all can claim to be here for the good of students, the cold hard fact is that many present and passed have served motivated by self-gain. Teachers belong in a classroom, CEO’s, CFO’s, COO’s should shoulder the responsibility of money. I say, go out and hire a professional manager with a background in human resources, financial, and accountability status.
