Members of the Texas State Teachers Association in coordination with the San Benito News will hold a community forum for San Benito CISD School Board candidates on Thursday.

The forum, according to TSTA members, will be held May 3 from 6-8 p.m. inside the board meeting room at the San Benito CISD John F. Barron Administration Building, located at 240 N. Crockett St.

According to local TSTA President John Hand, members have been in contact with all San Benito CISD School Board candidates in hopes of confirming their attendance.

I read with interest the new week-end edition San Benito News ad by Mr. Joe D. Gonzalez.

Not that I expected him to mention it, but it was interesting how he conveniently did not mention his brief tenure with the Donna School District.

We already are aware of his suspension from the Donna School District and his long ties with Integrity Communications Ltd and how he was suspended by the San Benito School district where he walked away with $173,000 or about 70% of what he was contractually owed as reported by another newspaper media.

The experience Mr. Gonzalez offers to the city commission is all from an educational perspective.

What our city needs is a candidate experienced in city government and has walked the talk and made the tough decisions in determining the future and vision of the taxpayers!

I want San Benito to learn from its past and look to the future with new ideas from a candidate with the relevant city government experience that our city desperately needs and deserves!

For that reason, my vote is for Mr. Gavino Sotelo for Commissioner Place #4

    Jade Robertson,

The title of the article on the link you posted, dated March 27, 2011, states that Dr. Smetter was “terminated’, however, the actual body of the article states otherwise. Before you go around posting links that you believe may sway voters, you should do your homework. The following links are for YOUR information.

The first link will show that on May 9, 2011, Dr. Smetter was CLEARLY still employed with the Santa Maria Independent School District. (Go to Page 4… “B. 551.074 For the purpose of a private consultation with the Board’s Attorney or any or all subjects or matters authorized. Deliberation with attorney concerning Dr. Wilma Smetter Litigation.”) Your article, dated March 27, 2011, is incorrect.

The next link will show you that Dr. Smetter was very well-liked by parents and students, and they believed she was doing a great job for the district. The comment by School Board Member Oscar Saldivar, clearly states that he believed her suspension was personal and had nothing to do with Dr. Smetter’s duties as Superintendent. (Don’t forget to read the comments at the bottom of the link)

The bottom line is that Dr. Smetter is THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE, PL. 3! Vote Smetter! Smetter is BETTER! 🙂

21 students protested Dr. Smetter’s departure at Santa Maria. That tells me she was very well liked and respected by the students of that district.

The story link below may be on interest to the good Citizens of San Benito, that came to light in 2007…Joe D was Superintendent of Donna Schools. There is a link to the actual TEA documents within the story. It appeared in the McAllen Monitor in July 2007.

TEA alleges massive financial misspending in Donna schools

Sotelo has my vote! I am also leaning toward Tumberlinson, Llanes and Smetter. I haven’t liked what I have seen on tv with Rodriguez as president. I think it’s time to elect qualified board members. I also think one Huerta is enough on the board. Having brother and sister would create a conflict of interest in my opinion.

Off topic but politically related; where is Mr. Joe D. Gonzalez’ “experience” documented by Mr. Gonzalez himself and not wikipedia?

His ad says “Experienced Leadership”, but what is it?

What has he done for the last 35 years? Are we supposed to vote for him just because he is supported by the mayor?

The San Benito News had an ad for his opponent, Gavino Sotelo, detailing his 35 years of “Experience in City Government”!

Unless I am convinced otherwise at the Community Forum, I am leaning toward
“Tumberlinson, Llanes, and Smetter” for SB CISD Board Trustees
