The San Benito Greyhounds came back from a five-run deficit at home Friday night to surprise the Weslaco Panthers in an 11-10 victory.
Down 10-5 in the bottom of the seventh, the game was all but over for San Benito as Weslaco got two outs on the ’Hounds. That’s when San Benito’s Homer Longoria stepped up to the plate and hit a double, bringing in two runs in the process.
Everything changed.
Then, L.J. Garcia managed the same with bases loaded, tying the game at 10 all. At this point, not many – except maybe the ’Hounds and their devoted fans – anticipated such a comeback. But the ’Hounds kept their cool as Weslaco walked another batter, and soon bases were loaded once again.
As the last batter at the plate and facing a full count, senior Jerry Arizpe maintained a good eye, and sure enough it paid off as Weslaco walked him, bringing in the winning run.
“As soon as the ball left the pitcher’s glove,” said senior Jerry Arizpe, “I thought, ‘Here it comes!’”
And it did come in a game fit for Hollywood.
Now the team needs one more victory, on Tuesday against Porter, to make it to the playoffs, something not done by the baseball program in some time.
“The guys really deserve this win,” said head coach Xavy Acosta. “I am going to let them rest and celebrate, and then Monday it is back to work.”
