Seats in two charter buses that arrived to a hero’s welcome at Bobby Morrow Stadium in San Benito on Monday were filled with winners, some elementary and middle school students, and then there was the state champion San Benito High School chess team, which eliminated five-time winner Bellaire High School just weeks after winning the Region 8 tournament at Veterans Memorial Academy.
The journey toward such an achievement started in elementary school, where San Benito CISD has built a successful chess program, and ended in Dallas on Sunday where the high school team secured its first-ever state championship at the Texas Scholastic Chess Championship.
Many of the competitors learned how to play chess in primary school, as early as kindergarten, in fact.
