Travis Elementary Workshop pic2On Wednesday, Feb. 8, San Benito News writers participated in a workshop at Travis Elementary in Harlingen to help kids sharpen their skills.

The workshop consisted of reading fourth grade students’ narrative essays, helping them use proper grammar, self-correcting techniques, encouraging detail and implementing writing strategies.

Participating were Managing Editor Michael Rodriguez and reporters Jacob Lopez and Scarlet O’Rourke.

Rodriguez was referring to Stacey Gonzalez, who also writes for the News on occasion. Gonzalez, a San Benito High School graduate and teacher’s aide at Travis, works alongside Marivel Ledesma, who was gracious enough to open her class to the News for the workshop.

“I’m so grateful that the San Benito News was generous to volunteer their time and skills to the students,” Gonzalez said. “The kids had a really great time, and aside from bonding with the News, they left the workshop eager to put their newfound writing skills to use.”

The students were anxious to meet the crew as fourth grader Illary Rocha, for instance, shared her dream of becoming a photographer.

“I was so happy you were here,” Illary said to the writers. “I learned how to write a narrative and how to be one of you guys.”

O’Rourke said, “I really enjoyed it. I love to teach and I love to write, so having the opportunity to work with the kids really made my day.”
