San Benito recently had another centennial celebrated within the city, except this time it was for local resident Ignacio Gonzales.

Ignacio, who turned 100 on Wednesday, Feb. 1, was born at San Guillermo in the La Paloma area, but spent a bit of his life in Houston where he attended school.

At the age of 16, he was then taken out of school to work along the railroads as a water boy, making $12 dollars for 10 hours of work. After many years of working, he met a woman by the name of Conception McHaney, whom he wed on Dec. 7, 1937. Ignacio refused to re-marry after her death in 1974.
