emergency-lightsSan Benito police have confirmed the apprehension of a suspect believed responsible for the shooting death of a local man.

Operations Chief Martin Morales of the San Benito Police Department, which aided Cameron County Sheriff’s deputies in the investigation of a shooting that occurred earlier today, said the suspect in the case, a man identified only as “Pedro,” turned himself in to authorities.

“My understanding is that the suspect called police from a payphone at the Walmart here in San Benito,” Morales said. “He said he did something bad.”

Morales said the man is accused of shooting 44-year-old Jose Guadalupe Garza multiple times in the chest. The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 4 p.m. in La Paloma, where Garza works in what Morales called a sort of makeshift tire shop. It was also reported that the victim had recently been in a dispute with the suspect over tires that Garza had accused his alleged shooter of stealing.

Details as to the location of the shooting have thus far not been revealed. Investigators believe, however, that a .9mm handgun was used in the crime.

Sheriff Omar Lucio still hadn’t learned of the suspect’s apprehension when the News had contacted him moments ago, but he did confirm that Garza succumbed to his injuries, this after being transported to Harlingen Medical Center following the shooting.
