It takes hard work to get to the top, and for 17-year-old Daniel Cavazos of San Benito, the fruits of his labor are in full bloom.

Daniel’s pride and joy, the 1,248-pound steer Roscoe was the winner of the South Texas Youth Stock Show (STYSS) Grand Champion Over-All Steer contest on Friday.

A senior at San Benito High School, Daniel is with the San Benito FFA chapter and has been a showman since he was in third grade. He has been working with steers since seventh grade.

Congratulations to all of the young people that participated. We didn’t attend this year, but I heard the crowds were again dismal. Maybe the so-called leaders of the STYSS need to get the boot? They haven’t done a good job at all, and they end up every year begging the City and the Chamber for more TAXPAYER money, and they can’t draw flies!
