The San Benito Lady Greyhounds made history Tuesday night as they defeated the Edinburg Lady Bobcats at the San Benito High School gym in what was one of the biggest thriller games of the year.
How thrilling? Well, every single fan from both sides might testify about nearly having a heart attack or two.
This playoff win is the first ever the Lady ’Hounds volleyball program has acquired in the years it has been active, giving Head Coach Ruby Medina and her team something for them and the citizens of San Benito to remember for years to come.
“Words can’t describe how it feels right now,” Medina said moments after the game on giving the Lady ’Hounds their first bi-district win. “The girls accomplished a lot in tonight’s game and I really think the seniors earned a win after all their hard they put in.”
One senior that was especially proud to finally get past the first round of the playoffs was Kassandra “Stretch” Sanchez, who has been playing with the Lady ’Hounds since her freshmen year.
“It feels really great getting this win tonight,” Sanchez said, “I’m just speechless; there really aren’t any words to describe how it feels to advance to the next round.”
Sanchez, along with the rest of the Lady ’Hounds, knew it was going to be a tough game to get past right from the get go, but knew they had the talent to overcome the very obstacle that has stopped San Benito in the past.
And overcome it they did, with a dramatic finish that seemed to just fit the historic accomplishment that had been denied many times in the past.
The first match was just as everyone anticipated, as both teams having a series of good runs offensively, but it was San Benito who got the edge for the first win of the night with a score of 26-24.
The second match was all Edinburg, almost as if the Lady Bobcats had been awoken from a slumber, they scored nonstop, taking the second win of the night with a score of 25-15.
The third match of the series was a mimic of the first game, with both teams making impressive defensive stands. But just like match one, the Lady ’Hounds were able to get the win with a score of 25-23.
The Lady Bobcats responded strongly, blowing away the Lady Hounds with a score of 25-15, and leading the game into overtime. Both teams then seemed to never want to give up and let the other take the lead, making the score tied throughout the whole match.
Usually, overtime rules are whoever reaches 15 points first wins the match as long as they are at least two points ahead of the other team, but seeing that neither team would let the other get two points ahead, the match dragged on until finally San Benito was able to clinch the final point, making the final score 23-21. A score that is sure to be remembered along with the game that was played that broke the bi-district curse on the Lady ’Hounds.
San Benito now faces Laredo Alexander Saturday at 6 p.m. in Alice.
