CORPUS CHRISTI – This writer wouldn’t want to be on the Flour Bluff football team on Friday, Sept. 16.
That’s when the San Benito Greyhounds (1-1) will ride into Corpus Christi to take on the hustlin’ Hornets (0-3) for week three action.
The Greyhounds are coming off a painful loss to the rival Harlingen Cardinals in last Friday’s Battle of the Arroyo. Suffering a 49-7 blowout at the hands of the Cards, the ’Hounds will be looking to redeem themselves.
Prior to the battle, San Benito dispatched of the Weslaco East Wildcats in a 28-16 victory, impressive considering the Wildcats have, with the exception of the loss to the Greyhounds, outscored their opponents 86-3.
The offense was firing on all cylinders as quarterback Jacob Puente and running backs Arturo Coronado and Anthony Lopez moved the ball well. The story of that game, however, was the defense, which held a highly potent Weslaco East offense to just 16 points.
It wasn’t until the Harlingen game that San Benito experienced a setback.
As previously reported, the ’Hounds threw an interception during the first drive of the game. This would set the tone as Harlingen, which at the time came off a crazy 72-0 win over Corpus Christi Carroll the week prior, took every opportunity to score.
The San Benito defense played admirably, at times putting pressure on the Cardinal offense, but not enough to keep them out of the endzone.
It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Greyhounds finally got on the scoreboard.
Flour Bluff has had its bad games as well. The Hornets have yet to pull off a victory, losing to Ben Bolt by a score of 41-34, Rockport-Fulton in a 28-7 loss, then to Sharyland last week, 48-18.
Kick-off is slated for Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Corpus Christi.
