BOTA pic2HARLINGEN–The “cards” were not dealt in favor of the ‘Hounds Friday night, but not without a physical battle on both sides. The upset at Boggus Stadium does not change the deep heartfelt devotion around town in support of the San Benito ‘Hounds.

Though many fans hoped the ‘Hounds would come out with the win, they will still faithfully stand behind the ‘Hounds during the rest of the 2011 football season.

Both sides of the stands were full of Friday night football enthusiasts, some red with fury, and some purple with passion, as if it were the biggest game of the season.

BOTA pic3During the first drive of the game, the Hounds’ threw an interception, which would then set the tone of their game play. Internal fury was ignited in the ‘Hounds’ defense as they put pressure on the Cardinal offense, but not enough to keep their quick offense from putting points on the score board.

The ‘Hounds knew that last week as Harlingen shut out Corpus Christi Carroll an astonishing 72-0, but that did not keep San Benito from playing their hearts out during the 82nd Annual Battle of the Arroyo. The win was not given to the Cards; they had to fight to take the trophy home.

Last week, head coach Spencer Gantt knew what his team would be facing, a team with a quick offense and a strong defense. “They are a good football team,” Gantt said about the Cards. Harlingen seemed to live up to their standards all four quarters of the game, but they were not the only ones who left with a gain. The ‘Hounds are expected to use this experience, against a tough team, as an optimistic one leaving room for correction and improvements since district is around the corner.

The ‘Hounds, however, put seven points on the scoreboard close the finale of the fourth quarter, ending the game with a 49-7 loss against the Cardinals. Harlingen walked off the turf with a 2-0 record, and left the ‘Hounds with their first loss.

BOTA pic4The ‘Hounds, now 2-1, will wipe the fowl smell off their jerseys for a brisk start while headed to their last non-district game in Corpus Christi against the 4A Flour Buff Hornets. Kick-off will be promptly at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Hornet’s stadium.
