The San Benito Greyhounds will see some action on Friday… finally!

Lining up against the ’Hounds at Bobby Morrow Stadium in the first scrimmage of the year, for the purple and gold anyway, will be the La Joya Palmview Lobos, a speedy bunch looking to stretch their legs against a San Benito ‘D’ expected to terrorize opposing offenses in 2011.

The freshmen/junior varsity (JV) squad will get the chance to play first as they hit the field at 5:30 p.m. The varsity team will play at 7 p.m.

According to Athletic Director and Head Coach Spencer Gantt, evaluating the athletes is first and foremost on the team’s agenda. But really… they just can’t wait to throw a tackle.

“First thing about a scrimmage is that we get to play a lot of different players and get them on video. But for the most part, and more importantly, you get to go hit somebody else,” Gantt said. “We’re just excited about hitting someone with a different colored jersey after beating each other up for two weeks.”

The coach said his Greyhounds “look great” and are geared for competition.

“They’re definitely rejuvenated. On Monday we had a great practice, and we had another great practice today,” Gantt said Tuesday afternoon. “They got the talent to do some good things.”

Sure, Jacob Puente, a three-year starter, will be taking over the quarterback spot, but it’s the defense that might steal the glory.

“Its talent and experience,” Gantt said of the ‘D’. “We returned seven starters off of last year’s defensive squad, and they’ve just gotten better and better. There’s continuity.”

The Greyhounds will scrimmage the Lobos during a controlled portion in which both teams will play the first team for 30 plays, then the second for 20 before competing in two 15-minute quarters with a running clock.
