A San Benito man has been hospitalized after sustaining head injuries following an auto-pedestrian accident on Wednesday.
According to a San Benito Police Department (SBPD) report, 78-year-old Santiago Zarate, who resides on the 1400 block of North Reagan, was hit by a vehicle while walking across the street on the 300 block of East Business 77.
Police arrived at the location to find the elderly man on the ground and displaying injuries to his head and left hand, the report read.
The driver of the vehicle that hit Zarate, a 31-year-old man from San Benito, reported to police that he was traveling east on the inside lane of Business 77 at the time of the incident and that he didn’t see the victim until he had already struck him.
Several witnesses reported that Zarate was in the center lane walking southbound, the report further read.
Med-Care EMS arrived to treat the victim for his injuries. Zarate was then transported to Valley Baptist Medical in Harlingen, where as of Friday afternoon he was listed as being in good condition.
A 2008 white Honda Accord, the vehicle that struck Zarate, displayed damage to its front end and a shattered windshield.
