In San Benito, it’s hard to find a canine as ferocious as the Lady ’Hounds, but according to a local woman, that may have been the case this weekend.
Forty-nine year-old Matilde Nieto said that on Sunday, May 22 at approximately 7:45 a.m., as she was bicycling nearby the Heavin Resaca Trail, she was attacked by a pit bull.
“I was on the south side adjacent to the trail, which is the end part of it, right underneath Expressway 83 onto the frontage road, just turning the curve,” said Nieto. “I don’t know where my eyes were at this point. I may have been looking down because my water bottle was about to fall, but when I looked up I saw a brown and white pit bull in a residential area with no chain and no owner. The dog came directly at me, and I knew he was going to attack.”
With little time to react or accelerate to a speed in which she could have eluded the animal, Nieto said she immediately jumped off of her bike and placed it between her and the dog, creating a temporary barrier.
