CORPUS CHRISTI – With wonderful defense and another great game from Amber Jasso, the San Benito Lady ’Hounds beat San Antonio Southwest 3-2 on Friday night in a pressure-packed game.
The Lady ’Hounds improved their record to 33-3, and the win did not come easy. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m.
In the first inning, San Benito came out and attacked as designated hitter Jackie Elizondo hit single to right field and brought home Amanda Garza, and Yesi Penablanca scored on an error on the same play with a great slide into home to make the score 2-0. Elizondo was able to score when senior KC Sanchez singled to push the Lady ’Hound lead to three.
Southwest’s first at bat was more like a highlight reel for the Lady ’Hounds. Sanchez made a running catch on a bunt attempt and Penablanca did the same in left field. Then junior catcher Giselle Tamayo threw out a Dragons runner at second base much to the delight of the many San Benito fans in attendance.
Jasso was dominating early and did not allow a base hit until the third inning. Once again, the defense made their famous routine plays to silence the Southwest fans.
The Lady ’Hounds loaded the bases in the second inning when Mel Ramirez and Dorothy Millan drew walks. Squirt Flores singled later. But the Dragons got out of the inning with no damage and the score stayed at 3-0.
The Dragons finally got on the board in the sixth inning.
The ninth batter, Amanda Sanchez hit a single and scored when Miranda Medina hit a double to the left field corner. The very next batter, Dora Guzman, hit another double and Medina was able to score and the lead was just 3-2 at that point.
But the Lady Hounds held and the score remained 3-2.
Southwest made one last ditch effort to tie the game but defense was once again the story as the Lady ’Hounds got the final three outs in order to take the victory. With one win on Saturday, they can move on and become the first Valley team to advance past the Sweet 16. But the Lady ’Hounds know it will take hard work and dedication to get there.
“They’re going to come back strong because they have their backs against the wall. They have a good, proud program,” Lady ’Hounds Head Coach Elias Martinez said of the Lady Dragons. “We just got to match it. We’ve got to come back stronger. We’re not even thinking about being one game away from history. We just want to get one more win. After that, then we’ll celebrate.”
