The San Benito Food Pantry will always be in need of donations and volunteers, but now they have streamlined efforts to get more.

James Flores, 31, has been assigned the duties of a public relations officer for the San Benito Food Pantry Inc., and he is helping to usher in a new era of community service.

“I live in Harlingen, but I grew up in San Benito,” said Flores, a 1998 graduate of San Benito High School. “I decided to get involved (with the food pantry) to give back to the community.”

Flores was determined to give back, but was unsure about how to do so. It wasn’t until his mother, Betty Flores, referred him to Lidia Garcia, President of the San Benito Food Pantry. Since then he has been committing much of his time to helping the Food Pantry collect donations from various businesses around the community.

“Right now I’ve collected over 891 cans in just over six months,” said Flores, who started working with the Food Pantry in October of last year. “My job consists mainly of networking and goal setting.”

He said that his goal for the year is to raise enough money to purchase approximately 1,000 cans of food for the Food Pantry. And at the rate he is going, his goal appearing more like a reality.

Anyone interested in donating to the San Benito Food Pantry in encouraged to email Flores at jflores1265@yahoo.com.
