Community Writer’s Club to meet Thursday

NEWS Staff Report

pencilAspiring journalists, authors, poets, business professionals and students are encouraged to attend the first Community Writer’s Club meeting, scheduled for Thursday, May 5 at the San Benito Public Library, located on 101 W. Rose St.

Hyped as a venue to promote a nurturing environment for aspiring writers of any field, the club will be led by San Benito News Managing Editor Michael Rodriguez in conjunction with the San Benito Public Library. The club is open to the public as meetings will be held weekly, every Thursday from 5:30-6:45 p.m., in a workshop style format.

As previously reported by the News, Rodriguez said the concept behind the club is to also encourage aspiring writers to hone their potential by implementing a number of exercises aimed at increasing confidence, stressing fluidity, and strengthening structure.

“Much of the concepts we plan to utilize will focus primarily on what some may call ‘unorthodox’ writing styles. Of course, basic grammar, punctuation and spelling will not be compromised as a result. Creativity will, however, be at the forefront of our meetings,” Rodriguez said. “I want to hear more about people’s experiences when they put pen to paper, to be conversational in their work rather than robotic. Sometimes, writers will become so dependent on following the rules that they’ll lose the reader. The goal here is to create a community of writers who are more in tap with their passions. Only then can one grow in their field.”

Library membership is not required to attend.

For more information, call Rodriguez at (956) 456-5237.
