He was “the hardest working man in San Benito,” said Mark Moody when asked about how he believes his late father will be remembered.

“After he retired in 1994, I really got to get close to him and learned what he was like outside the business,” Mark said. “Once a week we took him to breakfast. Every Saturday we had a deal where we went to breakfast; mom, dad, and I, and any family members if they were around.”

Jose E. “Gene” Moody passed away on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011. He was a veteran, a businessman, a board member, a Rotarian, and perhaps more significantly a prominent citizen of San Benito.

When we were kids we would go to San Benito every summer to visit my grandmother. She would never turn the air conditioner on and it was miserable in her house. Every day we would walk down to Moody’s to enjoy the air conditioner and see all the goods we didn’t have at home. My favorite was the goat heads Mr Moody was always so nice to us and would take time out of his busy day to visit with us. Mr. Moody was always one of my highlights of the summer.

Thats sad news about Mr. Moody. He gave me my first job at Moodys when I was a freshman in high school. Too bad his businesses were lost, he had worked so hard to see them succeed.
