RIO HONDO – The San Benito News has received reports that a third grade teacher from Rio Hondo was found dead, possibly shot to death, in this small farming community.
According to authorities, the body of Sonia Perez was found in her car on Robles Road in Rio Hondo at approximately 10:40 p.m. Thursday evening. Perez’s body was discovered by the Precinct 4 Cameron County Constable’s Office; the case has since been handed over to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department.
Rio Hondo ISD Superintendent Anneliese McMinn confirmed Friday morning that Perez was employed as a first-year teacher at Rio Hondo Intermediate. Perez was a third grade teacher there.
McMinn said grief counselors are on hand at the campus and she offered her condolences to Perez’s family.
Sheriff Omar Lucio was scheduled to give a press conference at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning with more details.
UPDATE:
The San Benito News has just learned that Perez was a former employee of San Benito CISD and was, in fact, the Teacher of the Year for Judge Oscar De La Fuente Elementary School during the 2008-2009 school year. More details will be provided as they’re made available.
