The San Benito Lady Greyhounds hosted the Harlingen Cardinals Monday in a 32-5A bi-district championship version of the Battle of the Arroyo.
The matchup lived up to the rivalry, especially in the last seconds of the contest when the Lady ’Hounds, seemingly with a game-saving goal in hand to tie Harlingen in double overtime, lost by a score of 2-1 when the officials decided not to count the goal. Referees said time expired when the ball reached the goal.
Coming into a rivalry environment, it was no surprise that two overtimes were needed to secure a winner. Yet the Lady ’Hounds made it nearly impossible to score throughout the contest with a quick defense.
In fact, the only “easy” goal for Harlingen came with 29:35 left in the first half to give the Lady Cardinals an early lead. The Lady Cards didn’t score until the second overtime with only 5:17 left to play.
