The San Benito City Cemetery may be seeing a couple of rule changes this month if the City Commission approves the proposed new set of guidelines.
“I think everything is staying the same, with the exception of increasing some of the rates (located at) I think the burial sites that are lined up with Freddy Fender’s,” said City Manager Manuel Lara. “I think they have decided to sell those at a higher rate than the other ones that are behind it.”
In 2009, several citizens of San Benito expressed concerns with the possibility of rising prices of the burial sites to be located near the Freddy Fender grave site and memorial, citing the affordability for low income families many have come to expect from the city cemetery for years now.
There are now 27 adult size plots located near the front of the new portion of the cemetery in Phase 1 of the San Benito Memorial Park project, of which blocks one and two would cost $2,000 if approved by the city. Any subsequent adult size plots will cost approximately $950, and child/baby size plots will cost $375, according to City Secretary Lupita Passement.
