If ever there was a quintessential couple, it’s the Betancourts of San Benito.
Lionel and Mary Anne Betancourt have been married a long time; they’d rather not say how long, but take them at their word when they say that it’s been a while.
Their claim becomes more and more evident as the interview for this story advanced. They began to show the similar symptoms of a couple who have spent a greater percentage of their life together than apart.
“We met in the fall. I went to Dallas to teach school,” said Mary Anne. “We started dating after Feb. 14. We played bridge that night. My roommate and I were complaining that nobody had sent us a Valentine, so he got out two pennies and gave each of us one.”
“Well, it was a shiny one,” added Lionel.
The act of giving a penny has become a custom for the Betancourts, one which holds extraordinary sentimental value.
