A plastic bag ban has already manifested in several cities throughout the United States, and more recently the Valley has seen two of its own initiate the ban.
Brownsville spearheaded the ban by becoming the first city in the state of Texas to adopt the measure on January 5, 2011. South Padre Island soon followed with a voluntary ban ordinance beginning on Feb. 1 of this year, followed by a mandatory ban beginning Jan. 1 of 2012.
With two Valley cities adopting bag bans, what are the chances of San Benito hopping on the bandwagon? Not any time soon, according to city officials.
“I’m not in favor of it, that’s just my opinion,” said Mayor Jack Garcia on Monday. “I think it hurts the local businesses and it passes the additional costs to the consumers. It has never been a topic of conversation (among city officials), but that’s my opinion.”
