fire picRIO HONDO – An investigation is ongoing regarding a fire that ignited Saturday at the Casa Del Valle Apartments, a housing complex in Rio Hondo for the elderly located on the 200 block of Morning Glory Street.

According to officers with the Rio Hondo Police Department, at about 6:45 p.m. on Jan. 22 an officer responded to the area to find the apartment engulfed in flames. A disabled 61-year-old man inside the apartment activated a buzzard which set off an alarm notifying others in the complex of the emergency, officers said. Police further reported that other residents from the apartment complex of about the same age broke down the door and rescued the man from the inferno.

By the time police arrived, the man had already been pulled from the fire and was taken to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. It is believed that he may have suffered from smoke inhalation. However, his identity and condition were not made available as of presstime Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the cause of the fire remains under investigation; although it is believed to have started in the bedroom, according to police. The fire damage totaled the disabled man’s apartment as well as additional damage to the neighboring apartments.
