An elderly couple climbed down from the high truck cab. The wife came around the side to help her husband with his walker. She seemed determined to be with him every step of the way. Using a cane herself, she gave him a helping boost whenever he needed it. She never left his side.

Dorothy Huff, at the age of 79, has been Robert Huff’s, a 90 year-old World War II Veteran, help mate for eight years. “It’s just my husband and I,” Huff said. “No kids, just us.”

Huff has lived in San Benito for 50 years. She came from Utica, NY where she lived a very different life. “I love it here … never wanted to go back. I had no reason to,” Huff said.

“I was married to my first husband for 41 years. We moved here after he’d been shot three times,” she added, recalling an incident in which her first husband, a state trooper, was gunned down.
