The San Benito CISD Board of Trustees made the decision to name the new elementary school currently under construction on FM 732 after Angela Gerusa Leal on Tuesday night during a school board meeting at the J. F. Barron Administration Building.

The decision came after a committee recommended three finalists to the school board, and the board voted 5-2 for the school to be named after Leal.

The names of the three finalists were Dr. Anita H. Garcia, Antolina A. Balboa, and Leal.

“First of all, I have to say that all three names, all three candidates were very well-deserving in the naming of the school. It was a tough decision to make, but we had to pick a name. I felt all of them were very worthy of being named,” said School Board President Oscar Medrano. “As far as Mrs. Leal, I just felt that her life and education told a story, a story that I think would resonate very well with the kids in the area where the school is being built, and the community and the country area because it’s going to be a country school.”
